The St Brigid’s cross has been made throughout Ireland for centuries. Today it is still made by school children on February 1st using rushes in places where they are available. It is thought St Brigid first made one from rushes on the floor by the bedside of her father or possibly another chieftan who was dying.
The rushes are gathered from fields in West Cork and dried for several weeks. The Bundle and Kit contain instructions on making the cross. The difference between the 2 is just the gift packaging with the kit .
Traditionally they would be hung over the door or in the kitchen and it is believed to help protect the house from illness and other troubles.
Rush Bundle Approx 35 – 40 cm length
